Grocery Budgets

I posted this on Instagram and got some great responses, so I wanted to give more information and hopefully learn a lot more too!

My grocery budget is currently $300/month for just me. I find it hard to stick to a smaller budget for a variety of reasons.

  1. I live in a very rural area. There is a small grocery store about 10 minutes from me; two larger stores about 40 minutes away; and a Walmart about 70 minutes away.
  2. I have a tiny apartment. With what I call my ‘doll-sized’ kitchen. Very limited space for storing stuff.
  3. I’m a picky eater.

Here are some of the prices from my weekly shopping trip yesterday, from one of my local supermarkets.

Barilla Lasagna noodles – $3.19/lb

Generic Distilled Water – $1.19/gal [for my humidifier]

Triscuit Thins – $3.89/box

Ortega Taco Seasoning – $1.19/pouch

100% Whole Wheat bread – $2.09/loaf

Starkist Solid White Albacore Tuna – $2.29/can

Armour Ham Lunchable – $1.49/each

Generic Finely Shredded Medium Cheddar Cheese – $2.69/8 oz

Ground Beef – $4.50/lb

Small Gala apples – $2.29/lb

Red Seedless Grapes – $1.78/lb

Medium Yellow Onions – $0.79/lb

Tomatoes – $2.49/lb

How do these prices compare to your area? Am I wrong in thinking these are high? I would really like to know how much other people pay for some of these items – especially the ground beef. I was shocked that it was so expensive!

I know that I could get many of these items cheaper at Walmart – but it’s not always feasible to travel over 100 miles round trip every week. I do stock up on some items there, but again, my limited storage space becomes a factor.

Any information you can share would be helpful. Thank you!

Those prices are similar to the standard grocery stores here – Ralph’s (Kroger) or Von’s (Albertson’s). Ground Beef is often even $5.99/lb at those stores. The price of tomatoes is high, but I think that is because of the season.

I try to do most of our shopping at Food4Less, which is discount Kroger, or plan meals around sale items at Ralph’s or Kroger to avoid those expensive items. But with your location it is difficult!
